What is still on, 19–20 September

The Tourism Authority of Thailand staged the ten-day run with Samut Songkhram province as part of the Amazing Thailand Food Festival. Weekdays were quieter lights. The festival weekends — 11–13 and 18–20 September — carry the food court and the named concerts. What dinner and the side trips actually cost

Canal-side eating is the point of Amphawa, festival or not. Budget in cash. Think of it as Bangkok street food moved onto a boardwalk, with river prawns instead of a Sukhumvit wok.

• Grilled river prawns: commonly 300–700 baht a plate depending on size. Look at the animal before you nod.
• Boat noodles, grilled squid, khanom jeen: 50–150 baht.
• Mango sticky rice and coconut ice cream: 40–80 baht.
• Thai tea or a cold drink on the boardwalk: 30–60 baht.
• Short canal boat hop: often 50–100 baht a seat when the boat fills.

How to get there from Bangkok tonight

Amphawa sits roughly 80 kilometres southwest of central Bangkok, via Highway 35 (Rama II) and Highway 325. In light traffic the drive is about 90 minutes. On a Saturday evening in late September, plan two hours.

• Grab or Bolt: the painless option if three or four people split it. Expect 800–1,500 baht each way depending on surge and rain. Book the return before the concert encore.
• Van from Sai Tai Mai (Southern Bus Terminal): the usual line toward Samut Songkhram or Damnoen Saduak. Fares are typically 70–100 baht. Take BTS to Bang Wa, then a short taxi to the terminal.
• Van from Mo Chit new van terminal: another 90–100 baht class ride to the Samut Songkhram van stop, then a blue songthaew toward Amphawa for about 20 baht.
• Mae Klong train plus songthaew: the scenic combo with the railway market. Fine on a dry afternoon. Tight if your only goal is the 20:00 fireworks.
• Self-drive: Highway 35, then 325. Park at one of the three temple lots above rather than circling the narrow market lanes.

TAT’s press note did not publish a transport timetable. The numbers above are the standard Bangkok-to-Amphawa pattern, not a festival shuttle. Recheck van last-departures on the day; Saturday rain across dozens of provinces is exactly the evening that thins the late vans.

How it fits a Thailand itinerary

Most travel to Thailand plans already spend two or three nights on Bangkok temples and street food. Neramit Amphawa is the half-day add-on that does not need a domestic flight. Do the Grand Palace in the morning, sit in a van at 14:00, walk the canal at 16:30, eat prawns, watch the 20:00 fireworks, and you are back in a Sukhumvit hotel before midnight if traffic behaves.

If you have more room in the Thailand itinerary, sleep in Samut Songkhram or Mae Klong instead of racing the van. Sunday morning at Mae Klong railway market, then the last Neramit lights on Sunday evening, is a cleaner pace than stacking both into one wet Saturday. Travellers heading onward to Hua Hin can treat Amphawa as the stop between the capital and the gulf beach rather than a there-and-back. • Dress for rain. Wooden boardwalks get slick. A compact umbrella beats a ruined phone.
• The firefly boats are a separate product from the TAT light show. If the boatman promises a long nature trip and then motors in a circle for ten minutes, you paid for the circle.
• Thai culture here is the canal house, the river prawn and the King Rama II park, not only the selfie bridge. Give the installations one loop, then sit down and eat.
• Boats and some stalls will still quote in a way that tests whether you looked at a menu. Look at a menu.
