Koh Lipe Travel Guide
Koh Lipe is a tiny island in the far south of Thailand, near the Malaysian border and part of Tarutao National Marine Park. It has become popular for its white-sand beaches, clear water and good snorkeling, while still feeling more compact and less developed than the bigger Andaman islands. There is no airport and no cars — everyone arrives by boat, and you get around on foot or by longtail. It is a place for beach time, swimming and simple island days rather than big sightseeing.
How to Get There
There is no airport on Koh Lipe. The main route is by speedboat from Pak Bara pier on the mainland (Satun province).
From Hat Yai
Fly or train to Hat Yai, then take a minivan (about 1.5–2 hours) to Pak Bara. Speedboats from Pak Bara take roughly 1.5 hours. Combined tickets are widely available.
From Langkawi (Malaysia)
In high season there are direct ferries (about 1.5 hours). This is a convenient option if you are combining Thailand and Malaysia.
From other Thai islands
Seasonal speedboats run from Koh Lanta, Phuket and other Andaman destinations, usually taking 3–5 hours depending on the route.
Boats land at Pattaya Beach (or a nearby pontoon). There are no cars or scooters for rent in the usual sense — the island is small enough to walk, with longtail taxis for longer hops.

Best time: November to April
Dry weather, calm seas and the full range of boat trips and snorkeling. December to March is peak season with the highest prices and most visitors.
Shoulder months: November and April
Still good conditions with fewer crowds than mid-winter.
Rainy season: May to October
More rain and rougher seas. Some boat services reduce or stop, and parts of the national park close. The island is much quieter and cheaper, but beach and island-hopping options are limited.
What You’ll Love Doing Here
The three main beaches each have a different feel. Sunrise Beach on the east side is often considered the prettiest — soft sand, clear water and good snorkeling close to shore. Pattaya Beach is the arrival beach and the liveliest, with restaurants and bars. Sunset Beach is quieter and faces west.
Snorkeling is excellent both from the beach and on boat trips to nearby islands and reefs within Tarutao National Marine Park. Day trips to Koh Adang, Koh Rawi and other spots are popular. Diving is also available for those who want to go deeper.
Walking Street, the short pedestrian strip linking Pattaya and Sunrise beaches, is the social centre in the evenings — restaurants, bars, shops and a relaxed atmosphere without large clubs.
Evenings are low-key. Beach bars, simple dinners and early nights are the norm for most visitors.

It is not the easiest place to reach, but for many people that is part of the appeal — once you arrive, the water and the relaxed pace make the effort feel worthwhile.
