Krabi Travel Guide
Krabi is one of the most scenic destinations on Thailand’s Andaman coast. Towering limestone cliffs rise straight out of turquoise water, longtail boats fill the bays, and some of the country’s most photogenic beaches are only a short boat ride away. The main bases are Ao Nang and the boat-only peninsula of Railay. It’s a more compact and dramatic landscape than Phuket, with excellent day-trip options and a slightly more relaxed overall feel — though popular spots still get busy in high season.
How to Get There
Flying in
Krabi International Airport (KBV) has frequent flights from Bangkok (about 1 hour 20 minutes) and some international connections. From the airport it’s a 20–40 minute transfer to Ao Nang or Krabi Town depending on traffic.
From Phuket
Buses take 3–4 hours and are the most common option. Ferries also run in high season (around 2–2.5 hours) to Ao Nang or nearby piers.
From Bangkok by land
Overnight VIP buses take roughly 10–12 hours. There is no direct train; the usual alternative is train or bus to Surat Thani followed by a connecting bus.
Once in the area, longtail boats are essential for reaching Railay and many of the smaller beaches and islands. Songthaews and Grab cover the mainland routes.
Climate & Best Time to Visit
Krabi follows the Andaman coast pattern.
Best time: November to March
Dry weather, calmer seas and the best conditions for beaches and boat trips. December to February is peak season with the highest prices and most visitors.
Hot months: March and April
Very hot, with increasing humidity and the first pre-monsoon showers. Still workable for beach time.
Rainy season: May to October
The southwest monsoon brings more rain, especially August–October. Seas can be rough, and some boat services reduce frequency or cancel on bad days. The landscape is greener and prices drop significantly. Morning weather is often still usable.
What You’ll Love Doing Here
Railay is the standout. Accessible only by boat, it feels like an island despite being connected to the mainland by cliffs. West Railay has the classic wide beach and sunset views; East Railay is where the boats land; Phra Nang Beach has the famous cave shrine and beautiful rock formations. Rock climbing is popular on the limestone walls.
Ao Nang is the most convenient base. It has a long beach, plenty of hotels, restaurants and tour operators, and easy boat access to Railay and the surrounding islands. It can feel busy, but it’s practical.
Inland, Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Sua) is a highlight for anyone willing to climb the 1,200+ steps. The view from the top across the karst landscape is excellent. Nearby, the Emerald Pool and Blue Pool offer jungle swimming in clear, mineral-rich water (combine them with the hot springs on a day trip).
Island day trips are easy from Ao Nang or Railay. Popular options include the Hong Islands, Four Islands tours, and longer trips toward Phi Phi or Koh Lanta. Kayaking in the mangroves and limestone lagoons is another strong activity.
Evenings are relatively low-key compared with Phuket. Ao Nang has beach restaurants and bars; Railay is quieter after dark.

Why Go
Krabi is the place for dramatic Andaman scenery without needing to go as far as the more remote islands. Base yourself in Ao Nang for convenience or on Railay for the full cliff-and-beach experience. Climb Tiger Cave Temple for the view, swim at the Emerald Pool, and take at least one boat trip into the surrounding limestone islands. It is touristy in the main spots, but the landscape is genuinely special and the logistics are straightforward. For many people, a few days in Krabi is one of the highlights of a southern Thailand trip.
