For two nights each November, teams from several countries take turns firing competitive displays over Pattaya Bay while most of the city stands on Beach Road and watches. It is free, it is genuinely well produced, and it is one of the easiest major festivals in Thailand to reach โ€” two hours from Bangkok and no planning required beyond turning up early enough to see.

What happens

Each competing team gets a slot of roughly twenty to thirty minutes, choreographed to music, launched from barges out in the bay. Between the displays there are stages, music and food along the beachfront, and the whole of Beach Road is pedestrianised for the evening.

The quality is a long way above a municipal fireworks night. These are professional pyrotechnics companies competing, and the bay gives them a wide, clean backdrop with the water doubling everything.

When it happens

Pattaya City sets the dates each year, usually for a Friday and Saturday in late November.

Displays generally start mid-evening and run until late. Check the published running order once it appears locally, because the headline team is usually last and the crowd thins noticeably before then.

Getting a good spot

Beach Road closes to traffic for the event and fills from early evening along its whole length. Arrive well before the first launch or you will be watching between heads.

The south end of the beach near Walking Street and the area in front of Central Festival are the most crowded. The quieter northern stretch towards Naklua, and Pratumnak Hill above the bay, both give you the whole display with far fewer people.

Hotel rates along the beachfront rise for these two nights and rooms with a bay view sell out early. A balcony facing the water is the single best seat in Pattaya if you plan ahead.

Where to watch

Beach Road along its central and northern stretches is the default and works perfectly well if you get there early.

Pratumnak Hill, above the south end of the bay, gives you the displays with the whole curve of the city beneath them. It is the best photograph in Pattaya on these nights.

A beachfront balcony is the comfortable option, and worth booking months out if you want one.

Naklua, north of the main beach, is quieter, still has a clear line of sight, and is far easier to get away from afterwards.

Getting there

From Bangkok: Buses from Ekkamai (Eastern Bus Terminal) and Mo Chit run to Pattaya through the day, plus minivans from Victory Monument. 2โ€“2.5 hrs.

From Suvarnabhumi (BKK): Direct airport buses and minivans run to Pattaya, which makes this the easiest festival on the list to reach on arrival day. About 2 hrs.

From U-Tapao (UTP): Pattaya's own airport, about 45 minutes south. Limited international flights but convenient if you are already in the east. 45 min.

Getting out again is the harder half. Traffic along Beach Road and Second Road is severe for an hour or two after the final display, and ride-hailing surges hard. Walking ten minutes inland before ordering a car saves a lot of waiting.

Making a weekend of it

Late November is the densest week in the Thai festival calendar, and Pattaya sits conveniently in the middle of it.

Loy Krathong usually falls within days, and Pattaya floats krathongs along the beach and in the harbour. The Monkey Buffet in Lopburi is on the last Sunday of November, reachable as a long day trip. Wonderfruit follows in early December just inland.

With a week and some planning you can take in three or four festivals without moving base more than once.

What it costs

The fireworks are free. Everything else is ordinary Pattaya pricing, which is to say cheap by Thai resort standards outside the beachfront hotels.

The one thing worth paying for is a room with a bay view, which turns the evening from standing in a crowd into watching from a balcony. Those rooms go early and carry a premium on these two nights.

Food along Beach Road during the festival is street-stall priced and plentiful. There is no entry fee, no ticket and no reason to book anything except where you sleep.

Why go

Because it costs nothing, it needs no tickets, and it is one of the few things in Pattaya that the whole city turns out for together โ€” families on the sand, expats on the balconies, Thai visitors down from Bangkok for the weekend.

It also pairs neatly with other late-November festivals. Loy Krathong and the Monkey Buffet both fall within days of it, which makes the last week of November the densest festival week in the Thai calendar.
