Koh Samui Travel Guide
Koh Samui is one of Thailand’s best-known islands and a long-time favourite for beach holidays. It sits in the Gulf of Thailand and offers a wide choice of beaches, from the lively strip of Chaweng to quieter northern and western bays. The island is well developed, with good restaurants, hotels in every price range, and easy connections to neighbouring islands. It can feel commercial in the main tourist areas, but the size of the island means you can still find calmer spots if you choose carefully.
How to Get There
Flying in
Koh Samui Airport (USM) is served mainly by Bangkok Airways with frequent direct flights from Bangkok (about 1 hour 10 minutes). It is a small, pleasant airport but tickets are usually more expensive than flights to the mainland.
Budget route
Fly to Surat Thani Airport on the mainland with a low-cost airline, then take a combined bus-and-ferry transfer (total journey around 3–4 hours from landing). Overnight buses from Bangkok plus ferry are also available and take 12–14 hours.
Ferries arrive at Nathon and other piers. Once on the island, scooters, taxis and songthaews are the main ways to get around. Traffic can be heavy around Chaweng and the main roads.
Climate & Best Time to Visit
Important: Koh Samui’s weather pattern is the opposite of Phuket and the Andaman coast.
Best time: February to April
These months are generally the driest and sunniest, with calm seas. January and December are also popular but can still see some rain early in the period.
Green season: May to September
Warm and humid with short tropical showers. Seas are often still fine for swimming, and prices are lower. A good value window for many travellers.
Wettest period: October to November
This is when the heaviest rain and roughest seas usually occur. Some boat trips may be affected. December improves as the month progresses.
What You’ll Love Doing Here
Chaweng is the main beach and the centre of tourism on the island. It has the longest stretch of sand, the most hotels, restaurants, shops and nightlife. It is convenient but can feel crowded and commercial.
Lamai, just south, is a good middle ground — still well equipped but usually a bit calmer than Chaweng. The famous Grandfather and Grandmother rocks are nearby.
On the north coast, Bophut (Fisherman’s Village) has a charming street of restaurants and shops that comes alive in the evenings, especially on the weekly walking street. Choeng Mon and Maenam offer more relaxed beach stays. The west coast is quieter and better for sunsets.
The Big Buddha on its small rocky islet is an easy and popular stop. Wat Plai Laem, with its large Guanyin statue, is another worthwhile temple nearby. Day trips to the Ang Thong Marine National Park are one of the highlights of a Samui stay — dramatic limestone islands, lagoons and snorkelling.
Scooter hire makes it easy to explore the interior, waterfalls and less-visited bays. The island has a full range of dining, from simple Thai places to international restaurants.
