S2O takes the one element of Songkran that translates to a festival site โ€” water, in enormous quantities โ€” and builds a three-day EDM production around it. Industrial cannons soak the crowd on cue with the drops, international headliners play through the afternoon and night, and the whole thing runs over the Songkran holiday in Bangkok. It has spawned spin-off editions in other countries, which makes it one of Thailand's few genuine festival exports.

What it is

The format is a standard large-scale electronic festival โ€” multiple stages, a headline lineup of international DJs, production values to match โ€” with water integrated into the show itself rather than left to the crowd. Cannons, jets and overhead systems drench the arena continuously, synchronised to the music.

The crowd is young, heavily international, and there specifically for this. It has very little in common with what is happening in the streets outside beyond the water.

When it happens

S2O runs over the Songkran holiday in April. Dates and venue are confirmed each year.

Because Songkran itself is fixed to 13โ€“15 April, S2O generally lands in the days immediately around it. The announcement usually comes a few months ahead with the lineup.

Practical notes

You will be soaked continuously for hours by industrial water cannons, not by hand. Waterproof pouches for phone and cash are essential, and most people wear swimwear rather than clothes.

Tickets, dates and venue are announced each year and sell out for the headline days. Do not plan a trip around S2O until the dates are confirmed.

This is a commercial EDM festival that happens during Songkran, not the Thai New Year celebration itself. If you came to Thailand for the cultural festival, go to the streets as well โ€” they are two entirely different experiences.

Getting there

From Bangkok: The venue changes year to year but is always chosen for public transport access. Check the announced site and take the BTS or MRT rather than driving. Varies.

From Suvarnabhumi (BKK): Airport Rail Link into the city, then onward by BTS or MRT. 45โ€“60 min.

What to bring

You will be soaked from the first set to the last, by water cannons rather than by hand, so plan accordingly.

A sealed waterproof pouch for phone, cash and ID is essential rather than advisable. Most people wear swimwear or quick-drying clothes and shoes they do not care about โ€” the ground is permanently wet and flip-flops come off in a crowd.

Leave your passport at the hotel and bring a copy. Lockers are usually available on site but fill early.

Doing it alongside the real Songkran

The sensible approach is both, not either.

Songkran in the streets runs 13โ€“15 April and is free, nationwide and the actual cultural festival. S2O is a ticketed production over the same window. They complement each other rather than competing โ€” the streets in the daytime, the festival site at night.

If you want more water afterwards, Wan Lai in Pattaya runs until 19 April, two hours away, and costs nothing.

What it costs

Day and multi-day tickets are priced in line with international EDM festivals, which is to say well above anything else in this guide. Drinks on site are priced to match.

April is also peak Songkran pricing for flights and Bangkok hotels, so the whole trip costs more than the same week in March would. Book the accommodation as early as the tickets.

Should you go?

If large electronic festivals are your thing, this is the best-produced one in the region and the water element genuinely does make it different rather than being a gimmick.

If you have come to Thailand for Songkran, do not substitute this for it. The street festival is free, nationwide, three days long and the actual cultural event; S2O is a ticketed show that borrows its theme. Plenty of people do both, which is the sensible answer โ€” the streets by day, the festival site by night.

And if you want the water without the ticket price, Wan Lai in Pattaya runs a few days later and costs nothing.
