Wat Phra Mahathat is Thailand's 9th World Heritage Site

Thailand has a new World Heritage Site, and it is in a province most itineraries skip. The World Heritage Committee inscribed Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan in Nakhon Si Thammarat at its 48th session, held 19–29 July 2026 in Busan, Republic of Korea.

Why it was inscribed

The property was recognised for its Outstanding Universal Value under criteria (ii) and (vi). It has served as a major regional Buddhist centre since its foundation in the eighth century, and its buildings and rituals absorbed religious and architectural traditions from northeastern India, central Java, Sri Lanka and the Mon region of southern Myanmar — a blend that went on to influence temple architecture across Thailand and Southeast Asia.

What sets it apart from Ayutthaya or Sukhothai is that it is not a ruin. Religious and local traditions have continued at the monastery for more than 1,500 years, including the annual cloth-wrapping ceremony for the Great Reliquary and the Nora dance drama — itself recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Thailand's nine World Heritage properties

The inscription brings the country's portfolio to nine: six cultural and three natural.

• Cultural — Historic City of Ayutthaya; Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns; Ban Chiang Archaeological Site; the Ancient Town of Si Thep and its Associated Dvaravati Monuments; Phu Phrabat; and now Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan.
• Natural — Thungyai-Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuaries; Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex; Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex.

What is on, and how to work it into a trip

TAT is carrying the recognition through the year with a campaign called The Twelve Sacred Discoveries Nakhon Si Thammarat: A Journey to World Heritage, which sets out a different dimension of the monastery each month and season. Participation in the commemorative activities is free of charge.

For routing, Nakhon Si Thammarat sits on the southern Gulf coast, which makes it a realistic add-on for anyone already heading to Surat Thani for the Samui archipelago rather than a destination you fly to on its own. Expect it to get considerably busier over the next 12 months — a ninth-site inscription tends to do that.

Plan a visit to the temple

Wat Phra Mahathat is in Nakhon Si Thammarat. If approaching from the Gulf transport corridor, use our Surat Thani guide to plan that part of the route, then arrange the onward journey to Nakhon Si Thammarat separately. Surat Thani is a different city; a stop there does not put you at the temple. Leave time to check the actual arrival point and your local transfer.

UNESCO inscription recognises the heritage property; it is not a visitor ticket or a statement that every building is open throughout the day. Confirm current opening hours, access to individual areas and any admission or museum charges with the temple or local tourism office before travelling. No current fee schedule has been verified for this update, so a specific price is not quoted here. Dress for an active place of worship and follow the instructions posted at each entrance.
