Bangkok Tourism: 31 Nights of River Lights from 13 Nov

By Nattapong Sukkasem ยท Published ยท Updated 27 October 2026

Vijit Chao Phraya returns for a fifth edition from 13 November to 13 December 2026, lighting 13 riverside sites between Rama III and Rama VIII bridges with projection mapping, drone formations and fireworks. It is free, it runs for 31 nights, and here is how to plan an evening around it.

For 31 nights this cool season, the best show in Bangkok tourism costs nothing and has no ticket queue. Vijit Chao Phraya returns on Friday 13 November 2026 and runs through to Sunday 13 December, turning a long stretch of Thailand's most famous river into an open-air gallery of projection mapping, light-and-sound shows, drone formations and fireworks. You watch it from a pier, a park, a pavement or the deck of a 19-baht commuter boat.

This is the fifth edition, staged by the Tourism Authority of Thailand under the theme Light of Imagination. Thirteen riverside sites on both banks are lit, spread between Rama III Bridge in the south and Rama VIII Bridge in the north — which means the festival covers almost the entire historic waterfront, from the modern riverside malls up past Wat Arun and the Old Town. For anyone doing Thailand vacation planning for November or December, it is a free, nightly reason to stay out after dark.

What Vijit Chao Phraya 2026 actually is

Vijit means, roughly, “beautifully illuminated”, and the format is simple: temples, forts, bridges and historic buildings along the Chao Phraya are lit and, at several sites, used as screens for projection-mapped animations set to music. Between them come drone formations over the water and fireworks on selected nights, plus cultural performances on the riverbanks that put a layer of Thai culture under the spectacle.

TAT's named sites this year include Rama VIII Bridge, Wat Arun, Wichai Prasit Fort, Memorial Bridge, Phra Pok Klao Bridge and Krung Thep Bridge, with further riverside locations making up the thirteen. The authority is running it with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the Marine Department, the Thai Boats Association, the Tourist Police and riverside operators — the same coalition that made the 2025 edition a genuine city-wide event rather than a single-pier light-up.

The scale is not trivial. Last year's festival was credited with a 5.5-billion-baht boost to the local economy, which is why it has grown from a fortnight to a full month.

When to go, and what to expect each night

The full 2026 programme — nightly show times, drone dates, fireworks dates — had not been published when this was written. The shape of the event is reliable, though, because it has barely changed across editions. In 2025 the pattern ran like this:

Plan on being riverside by 18:30 and staying until at least 21:00, and check TAT's channels in the week before you travel for the confirmed 2026 schedule.

Where to watch: free spots and paid seats

The festival is designed to be seen from the water as much as from the bank, which is rare in Bangkok tourism: the cheapest plan is also one of the best.

Getting to the river

Bangkok's transport makes this straightforward. The BTS Silom line runs to Saphan Taksin, which sits on top of Sathorn (Central) Pier, the main interchange for river boats. The MRT Blue Line stops at Sanam Chai for Wat Pho and the Old Town, and at Itsaraphap on the Thonburi side for Wat Arun. Grab and Bolt work normally, but river roads jam badly on festival weekends — the boat is usually faster as well as prettier, and it is the one piece of Bangkok tourism advice worth taking literally.

Loy Krathong and the rest of Thai festivals 2026

The timing is the clever part. Loy Krathong falls on Tuesday 24 November 2026, squarely inside the festival run, and it happens on the same river. Float a krathong from a pier in the evening, then walk the bank and watch the illuminations — one night, two of the best things Bangkok does. Our Loy Krathong festival guide covers the etiquette and the best spots.

The Golden Mount Temple Fair at Wat Saket also overlaps, running 17 to 29 November, and the Bangkok New Year countdown picks up where Vijit leaves off. Taken together it is the densest month in the Thai festivals 2026 calendar, and the reason late November is when most people decide to travel to Thailand.

Daytime is for the classics: the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and the Old Town are all within walking distance of the lit stretch, and Yaowarat in Chinatown turns on at dusk for the city's best Bangkok street food — oyster omelettes, grilled river prawns, mango sticky rice. Our Bangkok travel guide has the full itinerary on one page.

Building a Thailand itinerary around it

Three or four nights in Bangkok covers the festival, Loy Krathong and the Old Town — a complete Bangkok tourism week without rushing. After that, the cool season opens the rest of the country.

Practical Bangkok tourism tips for Vijit Chao Phraya

Bangkok is a city most visitors see in daylight and remember in neon. For one month this year, there is a third version — the river itself, lit end to end, free to anyone who turns up. If your dates fall anywhere between 13 November and 13 December, give it an evening.
